My alpha journey # 5 : My Journey to be Professional Wedding Photographer

I’m addicted so much in photography especially in photojournalism and wedding photography. I’m really enjoy capture the moment and the emotions. Start from January 2008 I’m into wedding photography more seriously and with passion. Before that I’m not so sure my favourite field in photography. Than after discussing with my wife and friends, I’m decided to get into wedding photography beside other field. I’m realized my path in wedding photography when day by day I got more phone call and email from client asking me to take photo their engagement and wedding day.

My clients come from varieties background from village, city, professional and many more. By the way I’m really enjoy and passion with wedding photography to capture the moments beside got good paid. After nearly one year in wedding photography , I hope someday I can upgrade to get better camera or maybe if I’m lucky I will get prize from SONY alpha camera. Why not? We don’t know our luck….if I’m really get camera from SONY as my prize….definitely it will help me to capture better moment in photography…..i hope my dream come true. Even my dream to meet Grant Corban ( Professional wedding Photographer) will come true tomorrow at SONY Convention 2008 and hope will get very good sharing knowledge in wedding photography.

My wedding package also extended now from engagement, pre wedding, wedding day, post wedding. Soon also will extend more to kids photography and family and portraiture photography. I like to shoot wedding photography in artistic way and shoot candid the moments. I will start shooting from beginning (make up) until finish the ceremony. My best moment in wedding photography is while my clients so happy when I’m deliver the album. Some of them even cry and have very big smile when get the album. That time I feel really good and can smile bigger than my client smile.

I will learn more in photography to get better knowledge and experience and sometime will follow other friends in wedding photography to gain knowledge. I don’t mind to be flash or lighting man to gain knowledge. Sometimes go to meet around and have some The Tarik session with other professional. I’ve been met Saiful Nang ( CandidSyndrome Photography), Syahrin Aziz, Engku, Ted Adnan, Ahmad Fairus (myphotographer), Shamabd, dididz (fotokahwin), Zuhrie ( Redmedia) and many more big name in wedding photography.

This is not my ending journey in photography, but I’m just start begin new journey in photography especially in wedding photography. Grant Corban…..hope to see you soon at SONY Convention 2008.

After few months and explore more knowledge and experience in photography, my path in photography go up further and get more oppurtunity in photography. Sometimes I got offer from corporate office to take photo of event, VIP photography and wedding photography.

My first oppurtunity comes to capture moment of VIP is Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan at Majlis Berbuka Puasa Universiti Teknologi MARA. Really excited and nervous to capture the moment and must follow the protocol to take photo. My journey with VIP photo begin with arrival of Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan . Than take photo at VIP room and other moment. This opportunity met me with other professional photographer and can learn how they work with VIP and communicate to capture the moment.

10 Jun 2008 at Putra World trade centre, again I got another opportunity to capture the moment of VIP. This time I got to capture Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah at Majlis Anugerah Ibu Malaysia 2008. This is very big event for me and I’m working with Musz. Wake up early morning and heading to Kuala Lumpur from Shah Alam. Arrive at PWTC and set up lighting at VIP room for photogroup session with Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah. I’m try my best to capture the moment with limited movement and equipment. I’m so happy because at last really get very good feedback from organizer after deliver the album and photo.

I’m also get opportunity from HONDA to capture the moment at HONDA events. My events with HONDA is National Dealers Convention (10 Dec 2007) by HONDA and HONDA Racing F1 Party ( 19 March 2008) . This two events give more experiences in handling event photography and met more professional photographer and others. Also I met with celebrity such as Pua Chu Kang / Gurmit Singh, Rubbens Barrichello & Jenson Button ( HONDA Racing F1 Team).

I’m also get opportunity to capture the moment “ Standard Charted Banking Apprentice Programme MoU Signing & Graduation Caremony at Hotel Istana” between Standard Charted Bank and Ministry of Higher lerarning and IPTA.

Beside all the story I’ve written there have more many others event I shoot and all events help me be better photographer and I must learn more to continue my journey with my alpha.

After attends workshop, meets friends at the tarik sessions, join alpha forum and other source of exchange knowledge, I’m more confident in photography. Than I,m start participating in small competition such as picture of the month in the forum or send my photo to photography magazine. After few times trying , at last my picture accepted and get printed in DCM magazine ( Malaysia).


When joining alpha forum, SONY also organize competition photo of the month every month, luckily when SONY ask forumers to send street photography photo, my photo selected be the winner and I got SONY printer prize. Also same picture SONY printed in SONY bulletin. Really feel good with my picture and built better confident in photography.


Beside send my photo to magazine and alpha forum, I,m also try push my self to enter photography competition such as at Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival at Times Square. This is my first time attend big photography festival. I saw lot of profesional photographer and variety on brand camera from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and very little owner DSLR SONY Alpha. When see the crowd and gadget around, I feel so small in big crowd and almost photographer beside me will look at me when I press the shutter because of different sound shutter click by SONY. Ignore my feeling and just be myself such as SONY motto : Like. No. Other. I just click the shutter my A 100 among others photographer for model photography competition. Trying my luck with my lens 50mm. After few hours and judge selections, they announced that my photo win the second prize. I,m so shock and cant believe my photo selected and beat other photographer. Thanks GOD for the oppurtunity and make me really proud with my SONY alpha 100.


My last photography competition I attend is SONY Photography competition at Mid Valley Megamall. This time its really hard and tough time to all photographers. SONY give 10 themes and photographers must finish shoot in 2 hours and must send only 1 picture to organizer. Its really hard to get pictures from themes that give by SONY with limited time and space. After hunting 2 hours around Mid Valley Megamall and times up, I sent my photo to organizer. Than we wait around 1 hour to get the result. Photo selected by others photographer and choose like voting system. I sent photo under theme (Children) to organizer. After long waiting and sweating, organizer announced the winner and luckily SONY said my name !!! WOW…..so shocking news and tempting….because the prize is SONY lens 16-105mm. MY goodness….thanks GOD give me oppurtunity to win another prize from SONY.

After bought a100 and register at Alpha forum, I meet lot of new friends and always got news from SONY. Friends at forum and SONY management really give very good information and really helpful in exchange knowledge. Sometimes we do have gathering together and have drinks and exchange knowledge about photography. Beside gathering with friends or TT I’m also get so many other benefit from SONY.

My first workshop with SONY is Basic DSLR Photography Workshop at SONY Centre, KLCC. On that day I met another few friends such as George from SONY, Musz ( my best friend now) and many more. This is my first time met George and he really cool and friendly and really help answer whatever questions from participant.The workshop really give me good knowledge about photography such as basic handling DSLR a 100, how to get better picture, better composition, photo editing and many more. That day , Musz get prize from SONY for best picture of the day. Congratulations Musz for very nice picture. This workshop really help me to better understand about photography.

After few months I attend another workshop ( Basic flash Workshop With Ted Adnan ) organize by SONY at Muzeum Telekom. This time workshop conduct by Ted Adnan and I learnt a lot about lighting and flash in photography. This time SONY also lent participants variuos lens from SONY such as Carl Zeiss lens and others. This is my first time attend flash workshop and its really help me to understand how to use flash and set up DIY studio at home. Thanks so much SONY for organize very good workshop and the best part about workshop from SONY is all workshop free of charge and really informative and also very good food and also provide free model.



Beside attends Basic DSLR workshop and basic Flash Workshop, I’m also manage to attend Product Shoot Workshop conducted by Ted Adnan at Barebone studio , Kajang. This workshop are more detail about flash and studio lighting. Very technical and need more attention. Even its one day workshop, but the time running really fast and I don’t have enough time to extract so much knowledge about flash and studio lighting. Ted Adnan also share with participants his artwork, books and magazine at studio. We also do some experiments in lighting and product shoot. This workshop give me more knowledge how to handle flash and studio lighting and product shoot. Attending more workshop organize by SONY really help me to improve my skill in photography.

The biggest workshop I attend organize by SONY is Workshop With Ron Yue ( National Geographic Channel ) at KL Pac. This workshop really make me open my eyes about photography. Ron Yue give so many tips how to improve in photography and also the art of seeing. Photographer who’s understand well about equipment and subject will get better picture even with minimum equipment. Photographer also need to understand well about lighting such as daylight or nightlight .


Another activity that I attend and really help me to improve my skill in photography is Photomarathon conducted by George and Ted Adnan. This activity really help me to organize well my equipment and understand the subject and improve my art of seeing skill. We start shooting from mid day untill midnight and after that we have photo talk session conducted by Ted Adnan. Photo talk session really make me understand how to get better picture and improve my skill in photography

My α Journey #1 : When My alpha Journey Begin?

WHEN MY ALPHA JOURNEY BEGIN?

My alpha journey begin on 6 september 2006 when I bought my first DSLR camera ( Alpha A100)from my friends. Its happen because my friend introduce to me SONY apha camera and at the same time I need better camera after my compact camera ( Pentax Optio) stolen from my car after they break the window. They manage to get my camera and few things my wedding gift that I bought before at SOGO. That’s really make me sad because I,m planning to use that camera for my wedding day soon ( 1 December 2006).

After few weeks without camera, than my housemate introduce me to other friend who want to sell DSLR A 100. But that’s time I don’t really have enough money to bought DSLR camera because my preparation for my wedding day. Than I,m discussed with my fiancé, how if I’m using my money for wedding day to buy A 100 camera? And after that try to get some wedding job to get back the money? And also I can use A100 for my wedding day soon. After discussion and do some calculation, I went to meet friend and have a look and test A100.

Before that I do small research at internet about A100. I’m falling in love with A100 with very good technology specially with image stabilizer and self CCD cleaning in A100 body. Than when my first time touch A100 I feel good with ergonomic body. That’s time my heart move faster and my hand shaking and with big smile. I thougt this is right camera for me and time to upgrade from compact camera.

I bought DSLR A 100 that day ( 6 September 2006) and from that time my alpha journey begin. My first night with my alpha 100, i’m try to understand the camera function and button and read the manual book. That night I sleep with my camera and have good dream about my wedding day.

Luckily after I bought my A100, my another housemate want to hire me to take photo for his wedding day. I said why not take the risk? Also at same time I can get some experience and money? I have few weeks to practice my A100 and also need to know and improve how to capture wedding photo. Its really stress me and I have no choice to push myself to learn harder and faster because I don’t want to upset my friend with bad picture on his wedding day.

On my friend wedding day , I captured the moment with my A 100 with only my kit lens without external flash. This is really big journey to me to try get best result with limited equipment. Also I have to make very long journey to my friend house at Felda Tembangau about 5 hours journey from Shah Alam with komuter and bus. This moment really take me memorial journey in my life especiaaly when riding bus from Seremban to Bahau. I saw so many good view and green village landscape. After shoot wedding and deliver album to my housemate, the couple very happy and thanks me so much for captured the moment on their wedding day.

1^st December 2006, my wedding day also I’m using my a100 to captured the moment. I lent my camera to my friend to shoot my wedding day. Also got another friends who come and shoot wedding day. Its really amazing moment and memorial day in my life shoot my wedding day with my own camera and full of friends and family around. My alpha journey move forward one more step, begin with my shot at my friend wedding than shot my own wedding. Thanks so much to Farez, Fairo and wife, Hatta, Adam and wife to make my day and captured my journey with Alpha A 100.
